Food

The dormitories provide free nutritious vegetarian meals three times per day and special snacks twice a day. The food is supplemented by milk and dairy products produced at the Balashram dairy, located near the campus. The students are fed sprouted grains at 5:30 a.m. to get them started for the day. Breakfast is served at 7:15 a.m. Lunches are at 12:30 p.m. and include rice, dhal and various vegetable dishes. Light snacks are served at 5:10 p.m., after evening play. Dinner is at 8:00 p.m. and milk is again served at the end of the day. Seasonal fruits are provided when available. 

Health Care

Hariharananda Balashram provides complete health care to the students at no cost. In consultation with the Chief District Medical Officer of Kendrapara District, vaccinations and prophylactic medicines are provided to the children based on their age group. Minor ailments are treated by a qualified homeopathic physician who visits every week. A pediatric specialist also visits the school once a week. Minor cuts and injuries are treated at the local hospital in Pattamundai. Major health ailments are referred to S.C.B. Medical College, Cuttack and Shishu Bhavan, Cuttack and are coordinated by Prajnana Mission’s Hariharananda Charitable Health Centre at Jagatpur, Cuttack. Hariharananda Charitable Health Centre also conducts medical and dental health camps at the school to ensure the consistent health of the children.  Major procedures are carried out at private facilities after obtaining due consent of the parents or legal guardians.

On January 26th, the entire student body of Balashram took part in a parade to honor the national recognition of Indian law. Marching to the rhythm of drumbeats, a flag was hoisted by the chief guest, Shri Abhimanyu Padhihari, who is the Block Regional Centre Coordinator SSA. Read more.
140 students in standards 1 through 3 traveled to the zoological park, Nandankanan, for their annual field trip. They were accompanied by their principal, 8 teachers, 9 caretakers, 2 brahmacharis and 2 brahmacharinis. Read more.
On Jannuary 15th, children from standards 3, 4 and 5 traveled to Puri in order to perform at the International Kriya Yoga Seminar. For more than two hours the children, dressed in beautiful Indian dance costumes, demonstrated their talent in dance, singing and tabla playing. Read more.
On December 27th and 28th, the Balashram students had the opportunity to demonstrate their sports skills during the 6th Balashram Annual Games. For this event, the field in front of the cowshed was transformed into a beautiful sports arena for track and field competitions. Read more.
Cycling began in a response to a private donation of 20 new bicycles. As a result, it has been added to the weekend and holiday schedule of Standard 5 students. This is the first time that the children of Balashram are involved in an activity off campus. The students are extremely enthusiastic about this new sport!Read more.
