Faculty
The teacher who is indeed wise does not bid you to enter the house of his wisdom
but rather leads you to the threshold of your mind. ―Kahlil Gibran
Faculty selection is conducted by a committee of fifteen members who evaluate applicants on the basis of factors including academic qualifications, educational philosophy, work experience and references. Of the many applications that are submitted, only a few will be selected for testing and interviews.
In addition to the academic considerations, teachers are evaluated on their ability to adapt to the unique conditions at Hariharananda Balashram. The children often come from challenging backgrounds and the school is located in a secluded rural setting, both of which require flexibility and dedication to the overall mission and vision that the school embodies.
The faculty and their families live in residence at Hariharananda Balashram along with the children. The teachers often play the roles of parent, guide, friend and counsellor.
There are currently four staff buildings, each with six apartments containing a kitchen, bathroom, two bedrooms and a living area. The faculty is responsible for cooking their own meals and they have their own private entrance for visiting family and friends.
Staff development is supported by the annual teachers’ orientation and other capacity building workshops. Each year, at the beginning of the school year, an annual teachers’ orientation is conducted for all members of the faculty. This week-long program is an introduction to the school for new staff members and is a popular event with all of the teachers. Many motivational guest speakers are invited to lead sessions on topics such as teaching skills, early childhood learning and child psychology. All of the teachers are asked to pick a subject to present to the group. It is a fun week of capacity building and a heartfelt sharing among the faculty.
Visiting teachers are often sponsored to conduct workshops and classes on varying topics during the school year. From November 2008 to April 2009 Janet Riley, sponsored by Hand-in-Hand Austria, conducted daily classes on the Modern Accent of the English Language. In 2009, Jyothi Bhatina from and Professor Dr. Glenn DeVoogd of California State University led a training program on Critical Literacy, Differentiating Instructions, and Multiple Intelligences. With the strong support of Prajnana Mission, Hariharananda Balashram has an extensive network of dedicated and loving supporters who offer academic and financial resources to ensure the success of the school.
Although employment applications are accepted throughout the year, they are generally submitted in November and December. The selection process takes two to three months.
